HIATUS & DROPS

HIATUS

Neocephalos does not require activity proofs for characters to remain active, only a check-in every month. As such, hiatuses are only available for one month at a time, but you are free to declare one at any point up to midnight of the last day of that month. During a hiatus, your character's Prestige status cannot change, and you cannot earn Privilege points.

Characters can go on autopilot, but if you would rather, assets are prone to occasional bouts of coma. In this case, if you wish for your character to be comatose for the month, you will need to arrange for them to be sent to a medical centre or otherwise kept stable and looked after with the appropriate medical assistance and therapies.

If you wish to hiatus your character, comment with the subject line "Hiatus" and use the form below.

DROPS

When a character is swept or dropped from the game, that character will enter a permanent coma. Their unconscious body will be taken away to a facility for monitoring for, ostensibly, the rest of their natural life.

In the event that player wishes to app that character back into the game and retain their Neocephalos memories, then their character will wake from this comatose state and rejoin the city without going to the Show Room.

If that player wishes to app that character back into the game without these memories, or a new player apps that same character into the game, then that character will go through the usual arrival protocols. The original body of that character will simply stay in stasis, although the original player is welcome to notify mods that they wish for their character to perish.

Players can also drop characters by having them die in the course of RP, and skip this aspect entirely.

Currently, there is no ability for characters to be 'retired' and slip into the background.

ARRIVAL

It's a hard cut in your memory. Mid sentence, mid breath, mid action, and then a sliced edit without flicker, blur, or blip.

A discontinuity: your eyes were closed, and now they open, and you are not where you were.

Cool light greets you, reflected off surfaces of metal, concrete, soft white. You find yourself laying on some soft furnishing on which you are comfortably posed. If you were injured before this moment, you no longer are. If you were dirty, you are now clean. If you were exhausted, you feel well rested. If you were clothed, you are now naked, but at least the temperature of the air is comfortable against your bare skin.

How you respond is up to you, but sooner or later, you will explore your prison, a series of plain rooms of ascetic greys and whites, hard surfaces broken up by soft furnishings. Light sources are soft and flattering, substitutions for the lack of windows and, indeed doors. Here, you may find others like you too, who have awoken, confused and unsure, but after a few long minutes, you will hear a voice from everywhere and nowhere:

Welcome to Neocephalos. I am sure you have questions.

When your character arrives in Neocephalos, they first wake not in physical space, but in a specialised and contained virtual reality Show Room. Here, they will spend anywhere between three days or two weeks, depending on their own actions and decisions. As implied, they will find themselves in an extremely spartan environment that is nevertheless quite comfortable, and devoid of all belongings (save for medically necessary devices) and clothing.

Besides each other, they will be first greeted by a disembodied and genderless voice which belongs to a simple AI, which introduces itself as Qareen, capable of answering any question they have. This AI will not lie to them, and although it will allow the character to guide the conversation as much as possible, it will be sure to convey the following information: that this character has been brought from another world into this one, that they are currently in a virtual environment and will be released in due course to join the city of Neocephalos, and that they are in no danger.

Characters, through further questioning, are also free to learn that they will be released after a period of behavioural assessment and once one of three corporations lays claim to them. They will learn that they will be given the opportunity to experience and contribute to the pleasures of the city by way of their skills and desires. They will learn that they are unable to go home.

While in the Show Room, characters are free to interact with characters outside of the Show Room via their CORD, aka, the network. The AI will be happy to instruct them in how to access this ability.

BEHAVIOURAL TESTING

What is called 'behavioural testing' would be more accurately described as an introduction of your character to the Neocephalos population. Because, indeed, the Show Room is more like a Big Brother house, open to 24 hour surveillance for anyone who wishes to tune in. Qareen will be happy to tell characters this if it somehow comes up in conversation, but characters from outside the Show Room are permitted to inform them too. Otherwise, this does not at first seem obvious due to an absence of physical cameras or other monitoring devices.

But for the next three days at least, the characters will be given commands, and told that compliance will lead them to more control over their situation. These commands might be something like answering a series of personal questions out loud, posing in provocative ways, or performing sexual acts. More elaborate requests will show off the malleable nature of their environment, manifesting a small fitness space to use, a hot tub to enjoy, or a predicament self-bondage set up to put themselves in. All of these things are informed by audience feedback, so for your reference as a player, imagine what the ravenously curious and indomitably horny audience of Neocephalos would collectively like to see.

In return, the characters will find they have some minimal control over their environment. For instance, they can now manifest simple clothes! They can change the shape of the enrivonment to some degree, such as creating their own separate room, or summoning items like a plate of food. Or a knife! Whatever you like.

After three days, compliance will translate into freedom. For those that stubbornly resist, they will be kept in the Show Room for upwards of two weeks before being forcibly ejected.

Either way, before they leave, they will be informed that a corporation has agreed to take them on as an asset. Congratulations!

JOINING THE CITY

Once free of the Show Room, assets will wake up in small capsule rooms in Cephalon Heights, dressed in simple garments, something like soft sweatpants and a T-shirt and slip-on shoes. They will find they have an implant port installed in the base of their neck, just to the left of their spine, which at the time of waking has a cord jacked into it extending from a port in the wall nearby. They are free to remove plug from jack as easy as any electrical device.

From here, no more handholding, no more Qareen. It's sink or swim. Ask around, learn the ropes, and figure out how to make use of the preliminary fame you've been granted.

Besides the first opening event of the game, there will not be regular arrival logs. Players should feel free to review the above information and RP out what they would like to do, coordinating with other characters on your current arrival cycle or networking with characters outside of the Show Room. Alternatively, you are free to handwave this process entirely and dive right in!

CEPHALON HEIGHTS

An unyielding fortress in the middle of Neocephalos, Cephalon Heights is as wide as a city block and rises 120 floors towards the fickle sky. It is by far one of the most populated megabuildings in Neocephalos, offering readily available Tier N housing and some Tier 1 amenities, making it a perfect location for any new asset who finds themselves waking up in Neocephalos.

From the outside, Cephalon Heights is an unforgiving looking structure of steel and concrete. Like all megabuildings, it is equipped to withstand harsh weather conditions, and does so by having very few windows and points of failure, and what points of failure exist have automated steel shutters that can come down in seconds. Its main access point is a ground level entrance and lobby on all sides, as well as underground parking and upper level parking for aerial vehicles. All of these can be instantly sealed in the event of emergency.

The first 20 floors of Cephalon Heights are dedicated to commercial spaces, a mix of Tier N and Tier 1 services and distractions. Much of the appeal are the architecturally wide open common zones, bright with false windows and fake skylights, in which citizens can wander and congregate. Mall spaces are filled with Tier N Neocephalos-specific vendors and services, providing simple clothes and foods with very minimal variety, and clinics with that provide baseline healthcare or medically necessary cyberware. If you need it for baseline survival and dignity, you can find it here.

A scattering of Tier 1 services and entertainments break up the monotony. You may find a cinema complex, a strip club, a simple bar with simple beer on tap, and some stores on massive scale that sell more individualistic if mass-produced fashions, chain-type restaurants with more exciting offerings than protein packs, and vending machines that offer simple recreational inhalers for various forms of pleasure.

And all the while, there are screens and light strips advertising alternatives—the neon darkness of Night Spire, the vibrant energy of Octavian Plaza, the promised greenery and peace of the Blindstar Pyramid—as well as all the higher end products and consumables beyond the walls of Heights.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

All accommodations in Cephalon Heights are Tier N, which means they provide just enough shelter and comfort to sustain human life. The residential floors are in groups of ten stories each, with a communal level or two in between, and the apartments themselves have two available layouts.

You can choose a capsule room, which is the size of a single bed with a small shelf for belongings, a VR port, and the ability to control temperature and light. The single door has a glass inset with a customisable opacity. Once you have claimed a capsule, no one else can make use of it.

Alternatively, there are larger dorm-style rooms that accommodate sixteen people each in strict bunk bed layouts, although this does necessarily have some square footage of common space. As long as there are free beds, anyone who requires a place to stay can freely enter this arrangement, and access only becomes restricted once all sixteen bunks are spoken for.

Neither of these arrangements have private bathrooms and changing areas. Instead, every floor has several communal bathrooms. The only true privacy in these spaces would be the toilet, as showers and baths are open, with locker room set ups for stashing any personal belongings and clothes.

There are no kitchens, but the floors between residential levels have a variety of cafeterias serving simple foods (usually heavily processed but nutritionally valuable), and there are vending machines located throughout.

NIGHT SPIRE

A glittering tower of silver and black, 111 floors and rising to a narrow peak, Night Spire is a tribute to 24/7 night time hedonism. With exception to a handful of high-end penthouses and open balcony bars and restaurants, much of its glittering interior makes no effort to provide even false natural lighting whatsoever. Like any megabuilding, Night Spire has the technical infrastructure of a self-sustaining arcology, if less ambitious in population than some, but opens its arms to any citizen of Neocephalos who wishes to stop by and have a good time. At least, anyone with at least Tier 1 access.

To walk through Night Spire's first several levels feels a little like moving through nighttime city streets being overrun by pedestrians all on their way to somewhere exciting. Just don't look up and notice the dark industrial rafters if you wish to maintain the illusion. These broad yet winding corridors host brightly lit storefronts, a mix of Tiers and pleasures, a sleepless hyper-Vegas collection of luxuries, from sex toys to car showrooms, from boutique fashion selections through to 6-hour cosmetic surgery clinics. Cocktail bars, nightclubs, and arcades vie for attention, as if the brighter the neon, the better the experience.

Climbing the levels, you'll find bigger and more ambitious entertainment spaces, like raves, fetish clubs, and performance venues that can accommodate patrons in the hundreds, and more dedicated Tier 3 offerings like exclusive brothels for bespoke experiences, or the public-facing accommodations of well known sex workers with a six month waiting list.

Night Spire is also the location of Cosmic Dreams Management HQ, taking up a decent chunk of real estate by possessing restricted access to levels 69 through 78. Here you may find Gillian Halo's office (if you have an appointment), studio spaces of all kinds, lavish bedrooms for reasons, dressing rooms and beauty stations, dance studios, photography and VR creation studios, and everything you need to make your (or someone else's) cosmic dreams come true.

Residential levels begin somewhere in the middle, the lesser Tier rooms mingling with commercial spaces, but become more exclusive to residents as you go up.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Starting from the top, Night Spire's Tier 3 luxury penthouses are the envy of every megabuilding, or at least, those that live there certainly think so. These dominate whole or half-floors, with private elevators, sleek interior design, floor to ceiling windows, private bathrooms and kitchens, fitness rooms, entertainment parlours, and just about any service one could hope for—private chefs, yoga instructors, escorts, hair and makeup assistants, you name it. These penthouses are also easy to turn into party mode with in-built sound systems, lighting, and in-house catering (food, alcohol, recreational drugs), and its furniture is ideal for hosting a spontaneous or pre-planned orgy with broad surfaces and soft (moisture-proof) textures.

Tier 2 are pristine suites, generously proportioned, offering a high-end hotel experience more so than the kind of bespoke luxury above them, but you could get a window view if you're lucky. Night Spire offers reliable dry cleaning and room service, as well as comfortable common spaces, rare semi-public peace and quiet with only a few screens with looping advertisements. While you share a floor with many others, these floors are only accessible by citizens with Tier 2 and over access.

Tier 1 apartments are modest in proportion, reliably clean, flashy in design, but not as well soundproofed. These rooms typically share floors with clubs, bars, brothels if not literally as a part of a brothel themselves, and are often used for temporary overnight stays to sleep off the damage of a good time. These rooms don't provide more than a comfortable and private space to live with its own bathroom and kitchenette, and offers no extra services or window views. But there's probably a mirror on the ceiling, so that's something.

BLINDSTAR PYRAMID

Broad enough at the base to span four city blocks, the Blindstar Pyramid rises to a tall glittering peak. It appears as though it is made of glass, in which every practical and sometimes impractical surface is a window. Its defenses against external danger are more internal, willing to sacrifice the outer layer of chambers and balconies to the elements in the event of disaster and repair them later.

Inside, the air is cool and the spaces are generous, and there is even the occasional scent of organic matter. Greenery is cultivated here in controlled measures, vines that crawl up metal lattice, hanging gardens, water features that range from simple zen-like pools through to ambitious waterfall installations that send up mist into the air. The first few lower floors have nothing at all in the way of commercial utility, instead offering a gallery of architectural simplicity, artwork, and occasionally the erotic display of human bodies.

The rest of the levels, besides the apex peak, contain a mix of commercial and residential. Like any megabuilding, all fundamental needs here can be met, but its brick-and-mortar entertainments tend to be a little thin on the ground, catering mainly to artworks, meditation chambers, gardens, and fetish clubs catering to a certain zen-style, spiritual atmosphere and energy.

The most common and sought after offering are, of course, Blindstar's virtual reality suites in which users can access the Blindstar exclusive virtual reality, Exodus, exclusive to Tier 3 users (and assets of Blindstar and anyone they invite). These suites have several different experiential offerings, from sensory deprivation pods to additional sensual physical service while the user is in virtual reality, from suspension bondage through to specific guided meditation that dips in and out of the real and the digital, and combinations of all of the above. There are also "long stay" VR rooms, in which users who wish to stay immersed for days at a time, and sometimes even weeks, can have their physical body looked after by Blindstar acolytes through the appropriate therapies.

As implied by the name, the Pyramid belongs to the Children of Blindstar, and so their utilities are diffused throughout the whole megabuilding, albeit only accessible by themselves and their assets (and those they bring with them). These include average workspaces, isolation chambers, rooms of rest and relaxation, worship halls, auditoriums for public speaking events, recording and broadcast studios, baths, and private VR services. The Hieorophant occupies the pinnacle of the pyramid, which is never open for casual visitation.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Blindstar Pyramid offers accommodations on all tiers, but they have a unique quirk—all residences have at least one purely transparent wall.

In the case of Tier N offerings, rather than capsules embedded into a wall, these are more like human-sized glass cases, visible from all sides, situated in moderately public spaces but thankfully soundproofed. As with most Tier N residential offerings, there is an available locker room and bathroom, and shared cafeterias.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 are mostly identical in terms of space and comfort, sharing a translucent wall with their neighbours and a translucent wall where the front entryway exists. These are typically studio set ups and so only the bathroom is truly private from view. What differentiates these tiers would be the extra services that Tier 2 receives in terms of room service, cleaning, and the quality of food and decor.

The Tier 3 penthouses reserve for themselves the highest floors with the grandest views. Their inner facing transparent walls will lend them a view into their neighbours' main living space, and views into their own, but there are plenty of closed off rooms for them to enjoy in private. There is an ascetic luxury and artful minimalism to these rooms, calm neutral tones, broad windows, balconies, pools and water features, in which luxury is space and silence for its own sake. These residents also have the acolytes at their beck and call for just about anything they desire.

OCTAVIAN PLAZA

Octavian Plaza is a sprawling mega-mall structure with several interconnected features. Although the bulk of it is a mere seven floors in height, it spans several city blocks, and includes a twenty-story octagonal tower, the Octavius, for residential purposes. Like all megabuildings, it is fully protected from the elements, but indulges in some open air courtyards and strip malls that can be closed with electric steel roofing that takes about twenty minutes to close fully, so it is recommended to vacate these areas in case of emergency.

This megabuilding, like Night Spire, views itself as a luxury, and so its services and entertainments are Tier 1 and over only. It provides everything necessary for sustained living and luxury, featuring massive food courts, rows of stores, glowing escalators, and augmented directories to assist in your 'shopping' experience. Every service here has the gloss of mass manufacturing in contrast to the individualistic artwork one could encounter in the Pyramid or the mercurial back-alley vibe of Night Spire, with more in common with Cephalon Heights with added joy and luxury. While Night Spire is known best for its nighttime pleasures, Octavian Plaza is not without its share of hotspots, karaoke bars and strip clubs.

More than these conveniences, the Plaza prides itself on being a place of events, with three distinct stadiums for entertainment purposes, sporting events, music festivals, and so on. There is usually something going on, some massive show nearly every day, distant bass or sheering crowds thrumming through the air wherever you go.

Entertainments here trend towards the adventurous and the physical. Rock climbing on moving surfaces, full combat sparring pits, electrified laser tag mazes, augmented reality hunt-and-chase games (sometimes opt in, sometimes not) that see participants tearing recklessly through the brightly lit corridors. Neoceph citizens tend to play rough, and fortunately, Octavian Plaza is also home to the largest medical facilities in the city, with sugar bath treatment available 24/7 to anyone who needs it, only to send their patients right back out again for more.

Octavian Plaza also hosts the HQ of Apex Legacies, which provides private amenities both to its assets and public ones to citizens who wish to make use of them. This includes massive gym spaces, dojos, shooting ranges, physical therapy baths, VR booths, cage fight spaces. However, even the private spaces intended for assets is not fully private, in that citizens can watch on from the mezzanines above and catch a glimpse of their favourites at work and play. There is no central office for Vic Von Vektor, just his penthouse in the Octavius, but most assets understand they are being monitored continually.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

The Octavius is a twenty story octagonal building that rises up out from the Plaza, a dedicated residential building that nevertheless provides enough amenities so that those that live there don't need to venture out into the plaza for the basics, with common area floors dividing the different tiers.

Tier 3 penthouses divide floors into massive quarters, with expected floor to ceiling window views and open spaces. These are optimised for peak physical efficiency, smart AI installations running diagnostics on the resident's physical profile and meeting any detected need, whether that's booting up the in-suite medbay, adjusting the lighting and temperature, providing the most immediately required nutritional need in the automated kitchen area. Services that require a physical presence are done by drone.

At Tier 2, one can expect these same amenities, just on a smaller scale in studio-sized apartments.

The first few floors are dedicated to Tier 1, motel room sized offerings without the responsive analytics or private fitness areas. However, these contain their own kitchen corners and bathrooms that have sugar bath functionality, and one can verbally request their needs and expect to receive them.

C.O.R.D

A CORD (Communications via Organic Relay Device) is not a singular implant, but a mesh fused with the character's nervous system. It runs WOVEN (Wide-area Organismic Virtual Environ Network), sometimes called the Weave, a shared virtual environment for communications, transactions, and monitoring.

The devices functions are as follows:

transmission of messages, which can be "video" (shared sight, you must look in a mirror to show yourself) and "audio" (spoken out loud), or "text" (a virtual augmentation effect like a holographic keyboard only the user can see, and text that can be received visually);
interfaces with other city-wide networks, announcements, advertisements, some corp-specific functionality;
transmits and stores tracking information;
stores permissions data for where an asset is able to go, transmitted via retinal and/or fingerprint scan;
stores Economic Tier information, transmitted via retinal and/or fingerprint scan;
can be exploited through restricted Neocephalos devices to subdue an asset as needed by dampening their abilities and inducing debilitating vertigo.

The CORD is linked to the implant port that all assets will find at the back of their neck, left-of-centre to their spine. This also serves as an access point for VR connectivity, and is the only accessible and external component. Attempting to remove the CORD, whether through its external port or other means, is lethal.

CYBERWARE

'Cyberware' is a catch-all term for cybernetic modifications grafted into or onto the human body. This can range from nanotech processors boosting reflexes through to full mechanical limbs, from flashy chrome to microscopic bone, flesh, and muscle mesh. There is not a single stretch of the anatomy that cannot be improved upon or loaded with new functionality, and Neocephalos is rife with clinics ready to slice and probe.

It is also full of manufacturers jockeying for position. While players are as free to make up brands and suppliers as they are allowed to make up cyberware specifics, some key cyberware corporations include:

Chakshu Bionics, the premier provider of eye implants, offering near-limitless enhancements and abilities throughout their models, including thermal vision, night vision, enhanced HUD capability and more, as well as a range of aesthetic choices
Wilco Wetware specialises in biological enhancement rather than robotics, the one-stop-shop for skin, muscle, and bone improvements, whether through wholesale grafts of lab-grown variations, or via microscopic artificial fibres laced through existing biology to give you greater durability and strength
NuYu Consultants are a fashion cyberware company, offering lower-tier implants that give all the glitz and glam of the totally borged out without requiring the heavy hardware, like glowing eyes without the X-ray vision, nail implants that change colour, or their range of synth-skin overlays for digital tattoos (often in rivalry with DermaLove, a post-op skin replacement service)
Kong-Faalsen Robotics manufactures artificial limbs, offering a range from the hyper realistic that achieves human-baseline mobility, to mechanically superior mobility options, through to what they term hyper-limbs with specialised implants for additional functionality, although their design philosophy doesn't stray too far from human design
DEATH WARRIOR MURDER FUCK INCORPORATED!!!!, yes, like that, specialises in the utterly ridiculous yet strangely still (mostly) functional, providing you your katana arms, your super jumping legs with knife feet, your titty guns, your prehensile robot scorpion tail, your laser eyes—but word to the wise, cyberware that pushes the bounds of human intention may have such side effects as implant rejection and potential psychosis, consult your doctor (or a loved one) before these treatments.

While relatively small cyberware enhancements will set you back a few hours in a day, give or take a night for physiological and psychological adaptation, major enhancements require around 48 hours. This includes the surgery itself, recuperation, and several hour-long sessions in what is colloquially called "sugar baths", so named for the milky, oddly-sweet nanite-filled regenerative liquid that the patient is submerged in to speed physical recovery.

DRONES

Drones are a vital part of the Neocephalos infrastructure, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Assets in particular will find themselves confronted with surveillance drones, humming and hovering nearby, ready to capture the banal and the exciting, to be algorithmically compiled into content for wider consumption.

Drone models tend to be unique and varied, so it's difficult to assign machine to source or platform, but you can identify their function this way. The larger and more mechanical are adept at taking in larger scenes for visual feeds, while insect-like swarm drones can either be sent individually to pick up close audio in an unobtrusive manner, or move en masse to record visual data for more interactive, three-dimensional video constructions.

Besides media drones, there are also cleaning machines, delivery drones, and self-automated vehicles. If there are weaponised drones of any kind in Neocephalos, they are not common enough for an asset to have encountered one.

Drones are typically AI-controlled, especially those that accomplish everyday services, but can also be piloted remotely by people.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality is one of the primary sources of entertainment in Neocephalos, offering the kinds of landscapes and vistas that the city cannot provide to its citizens, and narrative, emotional, and psychological experiences that are otherwise hard to come by. Although its premise promises infinite possibility, there are still some technological constraints, with different platforms attempting to advance past its competitors in its offerings.

In order to access any virtual reality platform, you must jack-in via the CORD port installed at the base of your neck, and it is recommended to recline into a comfortable position. All Tier 1 and over accommodations have this set up, as do some Tier N, normally as a panel next to the bed with a retractable cord that can be pulled out, lengthened, and inserted into the CORD port. Some facilities also have more luxurious options, such as sensory deprivation tanks and other bells and whistles, but the access point is the same.

From there, you can access nearly all virtual reality platforms, such as Apex Legacies Raw. This platform is geared towards the providing the kind of hyper-violence that is not always practical to perform in meatspace, gory extremes for voracious appetites, as well as set-ups that would be logistically challenging. For assets of Apex Legacies (and friends they can choose to bring along), their useage of this platform will mainly be performing these kinds of battles—think gladiatorial arenas, anti-gravity cage fights, mech suit brawls, and on the visceral side, it is more feasible to remove someone's spine when they're not going to die in real life. For the average consumer, they are able to enter spectator mode for both live and recorded fights, and at Tier 2, can play out these fights themselves by entering the point of view of either competitor, enjoying all of the pain and adrenaline and none of the cost.

Cosmic Dreams is a multimedia platform that boosts the profiles of its assets through a multitude of ways, and one of them is its virtual reality platform. A CDM asset (as well as those they invite to join them) are able to use this platform to generate scenarios based off of memory and interact with digital reconstructions of anyone they know well. The more intimate the relationship, the higher the fidelity. The reconstructions are not under their control, normally conforming to the memory they are being associated with and extrapolating into more improvised scenes. Average consumers of the CDM virtual platform are able to do this as well, but can also access the previous sessions of assets, either playing out memories as their digital reconstructions or as the asset themself. As a word of warning, assets will learn pretty quickly that these memories can be used for sexual gratification too so long as the digital constructions are over 18, but maybe not quickly enough.

Children of Blindstar's virtual offering is a little more exclusive, in that it can only be physically accessed from the Blindstar Pyramid. While most virtual reality experiences are logistically limited to single rooms, single scenes, single stadiums, single stretches of time, Blindstar's Exodus is a sprawling multi-user environment the likes of which is otherwise not available in Neocephalos. At its center is the Chambers of Light, a place of worship of infinitely changeable zen-like brutalist architecture and far horizons, and beyond that are sprawling environments of all kinds that one can travel, using portals to cover distance and load into new maps. This is a Tier 3 only service, but assets of Blindstar have free access, as does anyone they invite to join them. Additionally, assets of Blindstar and their friends are able to go into build mode and create landscapes (if empty of people) that resemble their own worlds.

Generally speaking, virtual reality offers a variety of entertainments, resembling gaming, movies, and interactivity beyond the bounds of ordinary experience, and it only asks for a piece of you in return.

VEHICLES

A dense city Neocephalos might be, but every megabuilding is a node in a winding system of highways and backstreets, and these are populated with a colourful riot of cars, trucks, and motorbikes. A good 90% of the city outside its buildings' walls are not pedestrian friendly, all its main attractions cloistered within, and so its roads and skies are the territory of roaring engines and flashing metal.

Vehicles tend to be a status symbol in Neocephalos, considered a luxury acquisition rather than a necessity when all megabuildings are designed to be self-sufficient. Any kind of industrial vehicle (transporting goods, for instance) tends to be automated and operates on their own underground tunnel system, and so free and easy transport between megabuildings is considered as much an activity of leisure as it is practical. Street races are a common pastime, originally considered a grassroots non-corp form of entertainment, but not for long when car manufacturers and other entertainment corps, including Apex Legacies, started catering to this extreme hobby.

Aerial vehicles are governed by invisible 'skyways', a series of virtually augmented flight paths that all vehicles are able to respond to, visible through windshields and preloaded into autopiloting programmes. Look up, and you will see flying cars travelling in neat orderly grids, but also some rebels going on a joyride in any which way.

While players are free to get creative with vehicle designs and manufacturers, some established corps include:

Baudelaire is a luxury car manufacturer, Tier 3 only vehicles both ground and air, and offers bespoke customisation options, unique AI pilot options, and a diverse array of aesthetics within their style parameters of flat, sleek, and fast
Sky Demon X specialises in a range of aero bikes (aesthetic: jet black and neon), specifically designed for high speed racing, with the kind of reflex response time necessary that the wrong finger twitch or second thought might send you spinning into the wall of a megabuilding and exploding
Babushka Motors provides Tier 1 and 2 range ground cars and motorcycles, the closest one can get to truly practical options, and tend to be bulky sedans with a vintage land yacht aesthetic and minimalist motorcycles with exposed engines and tall handles
VVV is an upcoming manufacturer of race-specific cars, with some proto models available for the friends of product manager, Vic Von Vektor, and tend to look as overdesigned and overtuned as can be expected for flashy race cars willing to tear up their enemies on the road

All vehicles are electric, and have incredible battery capacities. Dedicated motorists tend to double as electricians, sourcing ways to reroute power to make their vehicles even faster for less endurance.

PRESTIGE

OVERVIEW

Prestige is a system in which you assign a level to your character that informs you what kind of lifestyle they have access to. Each level represents a character's public visibility and fame, and what upsides and downsides this has, along with practical elements such as which economic tier they have baseline access to, and the kind of housing they can select.

Prestige level is not a permanent reward, but a temporary status that must be maintained or elevated, or otherwise left to decay. It is also not dependent on activity quantity or anything too far beyond the control of you as a player. Prestige is simply declared by you during an activity check-in, based on how proactively or compliantly you judge your character to behave, or what kinds of deals they have struck to justify their level of Prestige.

When you submit your check-in, you can declare your character's Prestige level and specify if you are maintaining that level or seeking to change it based on your description about their engagement.

In order to gain a level of Prestige, you simply need to state in your activity check-in what your character has done in game to warrant it, and have waited two months since the last time you gained a level (unless moving from the first level to the second, which only takes one month). This shift does not need mod approval, but we will be tracking everyone's Prestige levels each check-in.

LEVELS

1: Obscure

The default for all new characters, Obscurity offers some amount of anonymity. You are less monitored, less recorded, less distributed than your peers who have advanced in level, and there are less demands on your time and attention. You are a curiosity, but not more or less than any other has been brought to Neocephalos against their will.

This comes with some benefits. You can exist quietly, experiment recklessly, even disappear to a certain extent, and your actions and behaviours are lower stakes as far as corporate expectation is concerned. Glimmers of attention and focus are forgotten the next day. People on the street recognise your face and want a piece of you, but may not know your name, or what makes you special.

Because, make no mistake, you are a celebrity of a kind, an asset with potential. But you are known for what you are, a new and exciting and desirable stranger, but not who you are. At least, not yet.

2: Noted

Hello. Who are you?

You exist, congratulations. Your actions have put your name in the mouths of people that matter and has begun to circulate, entering the lifeblood of Neocephalos attention economy. Citizens who follow your corp or entertainment sphere in particular know who you are, are pleased to see you in the line up, and the beginnings (or remains) of a fanbase has started (or insists on) coalescing.

Other corporations, businesses, and high profile citizens are taking note. Some low-stakes brand deals, short term contracts, casual invites to popular parties are entering your schedule. Everything feels a little temporary and fleeting, and a little like an audition for your potential more so than having made it.

Still, there is room to move, to reinvent, to start again. When no one is looking too closely, you can decide how you make yourself noticed.

Economic Tier: 1

3: Hyped

You're a household name, baby. You have an audience who will defend you and argue over you and stand in line to see you. People know what you do and why you do it and they want more. They know your relationships, your favourite hang outs, your public schedule. They want to see you perform, hear what you have to say, watch you win (or lose!).

Brand deals and invites to exclusive parties and clubs, long term sponsorships and contracts line themselves up. You're a main attraction, and your corporation organises attention around you rather than organising you around their own goals and aims.

Anti-social and non-compliant behaviour cannot be easily dismissed or quickly forgotten. The violence of publicity requires caution in public, and 'public' has a way of eking into your private life. And then, there's the gravitational pull of expectation, where so many wish to see you succeed, and many others still hunger for your failure.

Economic Tier: 2

4: Iconic

There is not a single person who does not know you and has some opinion about you. Your fanbase is dedicated, hungry, militant. Almost any door will open to you, so long as you can wade through all the attention and attraction. People reach with grabbing hands, and find themselves altered if you reach back.

Every move means something. With so much attention on you, deviant behaviour that could threaten the fabric of Neocephalos is unacceptable. There is nowhere to hide, but at least you can fortify yourself with dedicated security and exclusive spaces.

You are something larger than yourself. When people see you, they see a symbol of violence, of artistic vision, of interdimensional wisdom, of beauty and desirability. They think they know you, they might even think they love you, but they know only the extremely successful celebrity you have had a hand in crafting.

Economic Tier: 3

PRESTIGE DECAY

In the event that a character does not fulfill their obligations or deliberately chooses to neglect them, their prestige level will decay. This occurs effective immediately after an activity check-in in which a player describes this occurring. That character will default back to a lower level (or multiple levels, if the player deems it appropriate) and must wait for the usual two month cooldown to advance (except in the case of Obscure to Noted, which is one month).

Prestige decay, much like advancement, is not dependent on thread count activity, and is a voluntary choice on the part of the player. Mods will never impose decay, but they may suggest it as a consequence during plotting discussions, or forewarn it as one.

Prestige remains unaffected while a player is on hiatus.

PRIVILEGE

OVERVIEW

Privilege is an OOC exchange system that rewards your activity within both in-game rewards and upgrades as well as out-of-game benefits. You can tally up Privilege points based on monthly activity and then spend them on the features listed below.

You can earn Privilege points through the following exchanges:

Threads of at least 5 comments by you in any comm or inbox = 1 point*
Running a player plot to completion = 5 points
Participating in a player plot to completion = 2 points
Mod plots and side plots may have Privilege point rewards attached

* These threads must each be with different characters per month. You can get three points for threading with Tom, Dick, and Harry in July, but not three points for three threads in July with Dick.

Points can be tallied every month during an activity check-in. You can hoard points for as long as you like–there is no expiration date.

Points are not exclusive to character. Any points earned belong to you, the player, to be spent as you like amongst your characters if you have more than one.

Apex Legacies is a professional fight promotion and entertainment corporation, founded and managed by chief executive officer, Vic Von Vektor. Its portfolio is full of career prize fighters and athletes of varied talents, and has recently branched out into pro street racing. While also promoting its fighters, Apex Legacies organises everything from seemingly spontaneous street brawls captured by drone through to epic stadium-filled tournaments, from blood-spattered cage matches to the death to frivolous hot body modeling competitions.

Vic Von Vektor

Characters who find themselves under Apex Legacies' ownership are those who have some kind of physical ability to withstand a fight. This can manifest as being able to throw and take a punch, skill with a sword and a shield, mutant powers that kill with lightning, blur-speed ninja skills, or having the reflexes necessary for high speed vehicular adventures. These skills will be cultivated and encouraged through traditional physical training as well as VR-style skill honing, and every other kind of support they could ask (or not ask) for, such as dietary advice, cybernetic modification, performance boosting substances, and so on.

In addition, Vic Von Vektor loves a story, and he and his team will devise narratives similar to those found in pro-wrestling entertainment, and will encourage their assets to develop public personas, rivalries, alliances that can be used to justify and hype up fights and competitions. Those who comply with enthusiasm may find that as well as a higher profile, they have more creative control than those who do not, and those who do not may find themselves thrown into fights they didn't sign up for.

Apex Legacies mostly operates out of Octavian Plaza.

HELPFUL RESOURCES

Via their CORD, assets have access (whether they like it or not) to an AI personal trainer named Betty. Her functions include:

continuous nutritional assessments of meals as they are eaten
tailored fitness programmes and coaching
alerts for appearance opportunities (cage matches, nearby opponents/rivals)
reminders if an asset is behind on their fitness goals
motivational messages to brighten your day

Betty is friendly, supportive, and ever-present. Her default avatar is a buxom blonde woman with bright pink cybernetics and lycra, or otherwise she can be customised to your preference. But switched off? Maybe, if you prove you don't need help.

Assets also have access to a combat training and performance VR called Apex Legacies Raw, which accommodates hyper-violent encounters that aren't usually possible or preferable in real life. Gore, vore, and death are all possible, occasionally with a live audience or made for future recordings for purveyors to experience. This resource is available freely to assets of Apex Legacies, but they can invite others as well to participate.

DOWNTIME ROLE PLAY

During downtime between mod plots, Apex Legacies assets can participate in their new career freely, and players can arrange and handwave their own fights, public appearances, competitions, and so on. Their characters will be managing a constant demand between these kinds of opportunities as well as training and injury recovery.

Feel free to assume and arrange fights with:

randoms in the streets

genetically engineered/cybernetically modified animals

Prizes for fights tend to be:

temporary economic boosts

Punishments for losing fights aren't a necessary component, where usually the loser just gets sent packing, but they can still manifest in the form of humiliation, owing sexual favours to the victor, physical discipline, giving up luxury items, or finding their engagement opportunities diminished for a week or so.

CHILDREN OF BLINDSTAR

Children of Blindstar may not scan immediately as a corporation, let alone an entertainment corporation. Cloistered away in the imposing Blindstar Pyramid and led by the enigmatic and reclusive Hierophant, Chitralekha, the Children have amassed a devoted following of Neoceph citizens looking for spiritual fulfillment, philosophy and meaning.

The Hierophant

While such movements would ordinarily exist on the fringes of a city like Neocephalos, or get extinguished completely, the Children of Blindstar nevertheless provide their own form of entertainment and service, promising and packaging and selling enlightenment in all its different forms, sold to a captive audience.

Characters who find themselves as assets of Children of Blindstar can expect to be treated as holy icons, relics, and even potential leaders. Although this corporation offers no stable religious doctrine, preferring a fluid and changeable approach to enlightenment, it does hold that greater wisdom lies beyond the physical, whether by entering the digital world or by reaching for the knowledge that lies in other dimensions, which your character, as an asset, represents.

The least compliant may find themselves used as passive tools, their bodies as receptacles of pain and pleasure and ritual, kept clean and anointed, massaged and displayed, or abused and suffering. The most compliant are given platforms to speak, wisdom to impart, no matter how simple or abstract or baffling or drug-induced that wisdom might be. They may form their own minor movements and cults of personality, so long as they can keep attention.

The Children of Blindstar operates out of their own megabuilding, the Blindstar Pyramid.

HELPFUL RESOURCES

Assets of the Children of Blindstar are granted access by a retinue of Blindstar acolytes, who are all too willing and honoured to be of service. Such service includes:

physical security detail (both cyber and physical)
bathing, dressing, pampering
sexual service as desired
guidance through prayer and meditation
questions and answers about the city

These acolytes also act as the eyes, ears, mouth, and sometimes forceful hands of the Hierophant, and obey her completely.

As well as being host to worship chambers and green spaces, the Blindstar Pyramid is also home to one of the most robust massively multi-user environmental VR platforms that Neocephalos has to offer, known as Exodus. Exodus's main staples are:

a wide variety of landscapes, from peaceful gardens through to alpine mountains, wild jungle through to seemingly infinite desert
the Chambers of Light, a generative holy place of marble, concrete, and open space
the ability to worldbuild, facilitated by memory

Assets are particularly encouraged to enjoy this last amenity, as their memories are bound to be more unique and potent than what the average citizen of Neocephalos can provide.

Exodus is only available to those with consistent economic Tier 3 access, but all Blindstar assets are welcome to use it, and are permitted to bring friends along with them.

DOWNTIME ROLE PLAY

Between mod plots, assets might find their days filled with observance and ritual of various kinds, designed to encourage both a deeper connection with their physical form as well as, at times, separation. Some examples of this include:

guided meditation, individual or in groups
indulgent massage sessions and sexual service from acolytes and followers
sadomasochistic practices like temperature play, flogging, predicament bondage recreational mind-expanding drug use
public display, partially or entirely unclothed, bare or decorated

and other rituals that only acolytes and followers seem to understand. Any and all of these can take place in the physical chambers of the Blindstar Pyramid, the virtual spaces of the Chambers of Light, or other public locations in Neocephalos.

The assets of Blindstar are also expected to perform a kind of healing and outreach to the masses. How this manifests is highly dependent on the asset, but examples include:

literal healing, if that asset has medical skills or healing abilities
the beautification and personalisation of public spaces through mural and decoration
communion with followers, casual chat, giving advice, accepting confessions, or sex
outreach trips to the neglected fringes of Neoceph society

and any kind of spirit- or psychological-healing practices. Blindstar puts an emphasis on its assets contributing to the social fabric of Neoceph beyond mere entertainment, but can't help but make a big spectacle and draw people in with salacious practices at the same time.

COSMIC DREAMS MANAGEMENT (CDM)

Cosmic Dreams Management (CDM) is a talent agency, production house and distribution studio all in one, and run by its ceaselessly demanding president, Gillian Halo. Some of Neocephalos' most prominent artists made their start with CDM, which machines out new talent into seasoned performers through an endless treadmill of parties, club openings, brand deals, sexual service, and of course, performance opportunities. CDM's most notable venture, however, is Cosmic Dreams, a service that provides real (or "real") snippets of the personal lives of its talent, algorithmically edited together to form episodic material.

Gillian Halo

The assets that find themselves signed up are promised (or threatened with) stardom via creative pursuits such as acting, singing, modeling, dance, music, visual media, or any kind of high-visibility skill that can be featured on a screen. Although selected assets should have at least a predisposition towards an artistic talent, CDM also offers professional training in an asset's chosen field, both conventional as well as through VR skill honing, and image management through trendsetting wardrobe and styling services.

And Halo prioritises making sure her people are seen as much as possible, and assets should expect for not only an invasive amount of publicisation, like an ongoing documentary or reality TV show via Cosmic Dreams drones, but Halo is also not above artificially generating drama and spectacle based off audience feedback, whether an asset has agreed to her demands beforehand or finds themselves in the middle of it without forewarning. Cooperative assets will find they have more ability to make counter-demands of their time and fame, while those who resist are thrown to the cheapest gigs that don't really require compliance or autonomy.

CDM is located in Night Spire.

HELPFUL RESOURCES

Halo deploys a self-replicating AI of herself via her assets' CORDS, an ever-available personal assistant that mimics her brisk management style. The AI serves mainly to:

manage schedules, assimilating directives and invitations
deliver obligations and pre-signed contract information
coordinate "spontaneous" Cosmic Dreams activations
provide audience, gossip, and focus group feedback in often frank and direct terms

As far as anyone can tell, the real Gillian Halo is given soundbite-sized daily (or perhaps even hourly) updates on these interactions to ensure continuity of communication.

The CDM headquarters are outfitted as such that in theory, an asset will want for nothing as far as cosmetic luxuries go, with a constantly rotating wardrobe and styling services available at all hours of the day. There is also studio space of all kinds for practice, training, recording, creating, if they have need of it.

As a part of the Cosmic Dreams series, assets also have access to the Cosmic Dreams VR platform. This specialised VR experience can form avatars of people from memory, and allow the user to interact with these avatars, whether through reliving potent memories or improvising new interactions. CDM assets have free access to this service, but can also invite friends to join them.

(And yes, these memories and interactions are harvested for VR content, but hey, that's less work for you.)

DOWNTIME ROLE PLAY

Between mod plots, assets of CDM can expect to be honing their craft as well as pursuing their own careers, but there is a constant level of expectation of generating publicity by being public. CDM demands a full social calendar, in which assets can expect to:

attend events like club openings, concerts, art exhibitions, private parties, whether because of their personal status or simply to fill the crowd
provide escort work, anything from dates through to attending orgies
accept interview spotlights and guest appearances in various mediums
promote new products and innovations through livefeeds or recorded advertisements

And while all characters can expect a degree of surveillance and gossip, CDM cultivates this specifically via specialised recording drones and scripted interactions.

CDM's in-house entertainment product, Cosmic Dreams, also manifests as a constant kind of reality TV-esque pressure that uses live drone footage of the everyday lives of assets and algorithmically stitches it together into episodic content. While assets typically lead interesting lives, Halo often demands and arranges for artificial drama, whether the asset is in on it or not. This could be in the form of a public break up with a romantic partner that they may or may not actually be with, through to being in the middle of a territorial gun fight out in the street.

The most compliant find they have better creative control over their public image, while the recalcitrant have less agency in the ways they are presented, the jobs they take, or even the lives they lead.

Most importantly, CDM assets have a career to pursue. Characters are free to assume that, in rough accordance with their level of Prestige, they can:

throw parties of their own
put on performances with reliable audience interest in their area of expertise
participate in ad campaigns, either as featured or background models
broadcast their own content as a main attraction
collaborate creatively with other talent (NPCs and PCs)

Venues, equipment, and all the necessary apparatus both in CDM's own studios or beyond can be assumed to be made available as needed.

Gigantic megabuildings, surrounded by the steady traffic of aerial vehicles sliding along invisible sky-paths, tower beneath an atmosphere that shifts restlessly from clear blue to roiling, lightning-crackled clouds of ill green, to the hazy orange of a sandstorm. NEOCEPHALOS, so named for the AI that governs it, is one big lonely city on an even lonelier planet, sheltering its human population within its interconnected superstructures from both the extreme weather patterns of its world as well as all aspects of civilisation that get in the way of luxury and leisure.

Despite the harsher environments outside, it's a party forever within its sturdy metal walls. The city runs off an infinite power supply, its economy and justice system and governance overseen by sophisticated artificial intelligences, its workforce almost completely automated through drones and robotic machinery, and otherwise provides all basic needs to its citizens to ensure that anyone can live a healthy life without needing to lift a finger.

With all pillars of society established, all that's left is to live a life of pleasure and entertainment. Neocephalos asks nothing of its citizens but to be happy, and contribute to the happiness of others.

After all, this is your prime directive. And so too is it the city's.

The city of Neocephalos is primarily built around megabuildings of various structural design and aesthetic. These gigantic structures stand in close proximity of one another, designed chiefly to protect those within from the elements. The environment outside is, ordinarily, perfectly fine. However, when storms hit, they hit hard, and the citizens of Neocephalos shelter within their respective megabuildings (or, in cases of emergency, whichever one is closest at hand) to wait out the chaos outside, whether that be violent lightning-streaked hurricanes, radioactive pulses from beyond the atmosphere, or acidic rain.

Despite the danger, there are still elements of the city that spill out from within these confines. Winding streets (both on the ground as well as the invisible sky-streets that direct the traffic of aerial vehicles) connect these buildings together, and on days and nights when no major weather event is predicted, the citizens of Neocephalos occasionally choose to take their revelries out into the open, from congregating within temporary holographic plazas and gardens to participating or cheering on deadly street races.

Visually, everything is large and in charge. Glaring screens, flash signage, industrial metal, clean glass, neon light, echoing announcements, humming drones, grinding elevators, large spaces, narrow corridors, big buildings and small rooms.

NEOCEPHALOS is inspired by such media as both Blade Runner movies, Dredd, Cyberpunk 2077 and the big city cyberpunk genre in general. Depending on the megabuilding or even the floor of a megabuilding, the setting's aesthetics can veer from claustrophobic neon chaos to clanking austere brutalism to peaceful zen quiet.

CULTURE

The people of Neocephalos are a colourful crowd of easily distractible and dangerously friendly individuals of immense feeling, minimal empathy, and insatiable desire. Their friendships are far reaching and fickle, their romantic pursuits ever-changing and elusive, and their ambitions easily managed. A perfect audience that is forever roving for the next new thing, discarding and acquiring, trendsetting and utterly predictable to those who care to try.

To the characters that arrive in Neocephalos, the general population feels like a massive fanbase more so than a coherent community. Interactions trend from the innocently friendly to the alienating, from the curious through to the dangerously devoted. Worship turns to passionate hatred in a moment, depending on what strikes them as entertaining and how you intend to entertain them.

The main constant is this: you're a source for their entertainment, in whatever form that might be.

The clearest form of human-led hierarchy and organisation belongs to the various corporations that trade in distraction and amusement, as well as the manufacturing "tiered goods", which is anything beyond the baseline of human need. Fashion, movies, augmented experiences, night clubs and brothels, vehicles, weapons, cosmetics, recreational drugs, sex work, fight clubs, edible delicacies, and so on, all of these are provided by a complex network of corporations at competition with one another in the kaleidoscopic attention economy of Neocephalos.

While the cycle is quick and brand loyalty is fleeting, there are several pillars within the corpocracy that remain stable and constant and often hold ownership over the churn of smaller collaborations, brands, manufacturers.

SOCIAL STRUCTURES

The citizens of Neocephalos itself are an ethnically diverse human population. They are born in kinbatches via ectogenic technologies. Kinbatches have about fifty members, and are raised in dedicated learning environments that are a mixture of human guardians and AI oversight. To say that a Neoceph citizen is 'educated' is misleading, and maybe a more accurate word would be 'nurtured'. Through early testing, promising children are separated for more intensive forms of education, but the rest are mostly socially engineered into being perfect consumers, easily distracted and entranced by artworks of all kinds, operating on a spectrum between loving and earnest through to childishly cruel in pursuit of gratification, and promised that once they join adult society, they will lead a life of leisure and pleasure.

As such, there are no tight family connections amongst the native population, although some kinbatches form little communities or social networks. The result of their social engineering means that much of the population is happy to be looked after by their city in pursuit of happiness and pleasure.

Some may seek to be entertainers rather than just be entertained, others may wish to produce and sell and create rather than only consume, and there is plenty of apparatus available for them to do so, forming a collaborative ecosystem in which humans can fulfill their potential: experiencing and evoking happiness.

LANGUAGE AND AESTHETIC

Neocephalos a kaleidoscope of semi-recognisable contemporary Earth cultures, wherein 'Earth cultures' refers to mostly economically and technologically dominant countries. Naming conventions are varied, taking from various cultural roots, mixing them together, or foregoing them entirely with people naming themselves after nouns or digits or concepts.

There does not appear to be a single stable cultural pillar to refer to so much as cyclical trends, and culture and heritage has been decoupled from birthright and lineage, turned into aesthetic or sometimes spiritual choices. Neocephalos is a city without a cultural memory, and it is not clear if its cultural signifiers are left overs from a previous time, or generated through external influences.

There is a single dominant language that has a vaguely ancient Greco sound to it, but is not the same. There is a writing system that will be unrecognisable to all characters, and most of the native population is not as adept at writing as they are reading.

The native language, both verbal and written, is automatically translated thanks to the CORD all characters have been implanted with.

ECONOMY

The economy of Neocephalos runs off a non-mathematical tiered system. All basic needs are free and available, also known as Tier N products and services. Tier N stores receive basic supplies from Neocephalos' manufacturing, and civilians have a decently generous quota of credit they can use to receive them. The quotas (which all tiers have) are mostly in place to prevent hoarding, and are sometimes lifted during gifting seasons.

After that, luxury goods rise through the Tiers, from 1 through to 3. Access to these tiers are granted through various programmes, like employment, where a business could be qualified to offer something like flat access to Tier 3 goods, or have a scaling programme within to reward longevity, or temporary Tier boosts to reward difficult tasks.

However, there are other non-labour actions and programmes that civilians can sign up for to access higher Tiers. One example is gamified systems like virtually augmented ARGs, of which there are thousands and are easily accessible. Others are situational, such as being in attendance of a city-wide festival, or a lottery, or using/showcasing an experimental product. Others are behavioural incentives, in which participants are monitored and rewarded for things like social adeptness, good deeds, or sexual frequency and promiscuity.

In other words, if you're stuck in Tier N looking at that Tier 2 leather jacket, you could probably complete some VA games or see what behavioural incentives are going that week and boost yourself upwards.

TIER N: Basic clothing; basic nutritional food (synthetic meats, processed carbs, vitamin tabs, shelf-safe canned goods); hygienic/sanitary items, simple medical supplies; basic household appliances; medically necessary cyberware and surgeries.
TIER 1: Mass produced fashion clothing; perishable food (common vegetables and fruit, beef, pork, chicken and fish, chocolate and candy, basic dairy products like milk and cheese); access to street food and vending machines; some private entertainment (cinema complexes, strip clubs, arcades, VR booths, bars serving beer and lesser-quality wine); personal grooming products and makeup; cigarettes, dopamine-boosting drugs and aphrodisiacs.
TIER 2: Designer clothing and jewelry; more variety of foods (less common vegetables and fruit, unique seasonings, all dairy products); mass produced but more varied homewares; restaurants, cocktail bars, night clubs, brothels; high-end beauty services and cosmetic plastic surgeries; personal vehicles (hoverboards, e-scooters); recreational drugs.
TIER 3: Bespoke clothing items; military-grade argumentations; exclusive or limited run home decor items and artwork; private/semi-private experiences and entertainments; rare consumables (aged liquors, rare proteins such as shellfish and game meat, cuisines and ingredients specifically recreated from other dimensions); advanced recreational drugs, often with unique and extreme effects; weaponry.

While Prestige levels advise flat access to different Tiers, temporary boosts such as the kinds NPC civilians can access, through games and behavioural incentives, are free and available to PCs. You can make up your own or take inspiration from State of the Game posts, which will describe some of the Tier boosters going that month. There will be no mod oversight over what your character can access when it comes to the above items.

HOUSING

Very few Neoceph citizens call a single place a home. Housing is tied directly to your economic tier, and consistently staying in a single tier is relatively uncommon. Permanence is not necessarily encouraged, and few citizens actually have much in the way of many physical possessions, choosing instead to rely on the amenities, furnishings and decor of the megabuildling and its apartments that are available to them on a given week, or even day.

Your access to housing depends on your current economic tier, the baseline of which is dictated by your Prestige level. By default, all citizens (and characters) have access to Tier N housing, which provides bare minimum shelter. If you are operating at Tier 1 but have boosted yourself to Tier 3 for a day, you can walk into an available penthouse and live large for however long that lasts.

Due to this transience, all megabuildings have a live directory of available rooms and an optional belongings capsule system–if your worldly possessions can fit within a couple of suitcases, you can have these automatically sent between megabuilding locations via drone.

If you drop in the economic tier and have not made plans to move out, then be forewarned: you may lose anything that belongs to that you didn't take with you. Eviction is swift and merciless, prioritising freeing up these spaces for those who can afford them.

But maybe you want some permanence and security. Don't we all?

The best way to secure your living space is to identify the minimum economic tier you feel most capable of sustaining (through your Prestige level, or whatever means your character can identify) and locate a living space at this tier. So long as you at least maintain, no one is kicking you out. While many Neoceph citizens enjoy a more transient approach to their living spaces, there are those who have found some form of economic security and put down roots in this way.

Above table, there will be the option to apply for a housing freeze through the Privilege mechanics, trading in Privilege points for a six month contract that will remain no matter your tier.

HEALTHCARE

Healthcare is a free service in Neocephalos. All megabuildings are equipped with multiple clinics that can provide basic care through to cyberware surgeries. Notably, Octavian Plaza boasts the largest medical facility, the Octavian Meditechnic, with robust emergency room services. The Blindstar Pyramid is also notable for its contained medical facilities, supporting the care of longterm VR users as well as standard medical services. Any kind of medicine considered less than medically necessity, such as luxury cyberwares and aesthetic plastic surgeries that aren't related to gender affirmation, are available dependent on economic Tier level.

The main innovation that sets Neocephalos apart are fast-regenerative nanite pools known colloquially as "sugar baths", which speeds human healing up by a rapid rate. Bruises and shallow lacerations can be healed in an hour, relatively minor surgical recovery can be sped up into hours, and major cyberware recovery and post-life saving traumatic surgery can be accomplished in a couple of days. It is important to note the limits, however, which is that sugar baths only speed up what a human body can accomplish on its own, necessitating medical intervention prior to use. Some heavy users of sugar baths also claim that their psychological relationship with pain can start to feel deadened, and many choose to either abstain from sugar baths for a period of time or quit it altogether.

As for medical practitioners, Neocephalos is full of people trained in medicine. Kind of. These practitioners are actually more like physical conduits between artificial intelligence instruction and practice, occasionally little more than technicians overseeing and implementing AI medical directive and robotic surgery systems. They generally have CORD programming to receive these directives live, and ocular implants to take live medical data and feed it back to the AI who can process it at lightning speed.

Emergency services such as ambulances and emergency medical technicians also exist, and are often spurred into action based off city-wide surveillance input, automatic CORD triggers when a person suffers catastrophic damage, or if a citizen calls for their aid.

KINDNESS AND RESPECT

By design, the in-game culture of Neocephalos itself does not uphold systemic discrimination on the basis of gender, sexuality or race. This does not mean that characters who app will not harbour attitudes that include any of the above. We ask that players practice kindness and provide content warnings on their threads or opt outs for their characters in extreme cases.

Neocephalos engages in systemic classism as a major theme and cybernetics as a science fictional element can involve some ableist sentiments through the idea of "improving" and augmenting human bodies. The mods will always strive to treat these subjects with care and thought without avoiding them entirely, and are always open to feedback.

As far as out of character behaviour goes, Neocephalos has a zero tolerance policy towards sexism, racism, queerphobia, transphobia, ableism, and any other discriminatory attitudes. If a player exhibits these attitudes, whether observed to do so by mods or reported by other players and then confirmed by mods, that player will be removed and banned.

CONTENT AND COMFORT

Neocephalos is a science fiction erotica game about characters who are considered the property of entertainment corporations in an amoral corpocracy. As such, themes within events and plot will include subject matter such as rape, assault, violence, loss of autonomy, dubious and coerced consent, non-consensual image sharing, objectification, forced/coerced and voluntary sex work, and so on.

While it is expected that you as a player, joining the game, know what you're getting into, your aversions and triggers will be respected at all times. When you apply to join, you will have the opportunity to share your personal triggers, aversions and phobias, and these will always be warned for in mod posts, as well as taken into consideration when mods are plotting with you. You are also free to update them as needed by contacting the mods.

We also ask that all players use content warnings for their threads, and respect their own aversions by not engaging with content they are uncomfortable with.

WE'RE ALL ADULTS HERE

Neocephalos is a judgment-free game, with erotically charged events in which players are free to write explicit content that includes a variety of kinks and kinky scenarios.

While characters may have their own opinions and attitudes towards others taking part in this aspect of the setting or how they choose to do so, we ask that players remain respectful towards one another and avoid any kind of commentary or practice that could qualify as kink shaming.

JOINING THE GAME

How do I join?

Prospective players must be invited to Neocephalos by the mod or current players in order to reserve, app, and join the game.

All current players can invite one new person a month, and can apply for an additional one-use invitation through Privilege point rewards. The current player must indicate who they are inviting on that month's State of the Game post, and the invitee must state who has invited them in their app.

Is there a player cap? What are the character limitations?

At this time, there is no player cap. This may be subject to review as the game progresses, but any changes will come with ample warning.

Players may app two characters, with the ability to app a third character through the Privileges system.

There is a cast size limit of five characters per canon.

Who can I app?

The below characters are appable to Neocephalos:

Why is there an asterisk next to non-human characters?

Because there are some caveats!

If your character is not human but humanoid (human height range, similar body plan), then they can be apped. This includes elves, werewolves, vampires, and so on.

If your character is over 10 feet in height, they cannot be apped as is. You can choose to app them as smaller versions of themselves.

If your character is robotic, they can be apped if they have a humanoid body plan.

If your character can transform into another creature, this alternate creature has some more freedom around its shape. However, it must still be within 10 feet in height, and also be a temporary transformation and not a shape the character spends most of its time as. This transformation would be included as one of the character's power slots.

Why are there two asterisks next to malleable protagonists?

Malleable protagonists are allowed to be apped, but with some stipulations. As a malleable protagonist, you will have specific kinds of relationships with canon characters. However, this does not mean that your cast mates are beholden to sharing that reality, and are fully permitted to choose not to know your protagonist.

We would also urge you to be considerate of your cast mates and strive not to metagame or assume knowledge about their characters out of bounds of the general understandings a default version of the protagonist would have.

Why are there three asterisks next to original characters from canons? Do you hate them?

No!

However, how appable this will be in practice depends on the canon your original character is from. The canon should clearly offer an immersively large enough world to justify being able to make an OC from it. Good examples of this would be the Forgotten Realms from D&D lore, the Star Wars universe, Thedas of Dragon Age, and so on. Bad examples would be The Pitt, or Mission Impossible, or the Avengers franchise, because these kinds of medias rely mainly on characters before world building. At that point, you can just make an OC from an original world. Feel free to ask ahead of your app if your idea is suitable.

For original characters who can be apped from canon worlds, we ask you also not to have relationships or knowledge of canon characters unless it makes sense, such as if that canon character is canonically well known. Common sense stuff.

POWERS AND ABILITIES

What about my character's powers/supernatural abilities?

When you app a character into Neocephalos, you will be asked to organise (or in some cases, simplify) your character's powerset into three features. Essentially, you are limited to three aspects of their abilities, but this may not be as limiting as it sounds. Each aspect is more of a category than a single power. For example, if you have a witch who is also a werewolf, one category may encompass all their werewolf features (heightened senses, ability to transform), and one category may encompass all their witch features (spells they know), leaving them with only two features to declare even though each one contains multiple discrete abilities.

However, if one of your power features is a little too expansive (such as, you define your witch aspect as having every spell under the sun and they are also immortal and also can turn into animals and also telepathic), then the mods may suggest splitting it up between features or nixing some elements if you have already used all three.

Can I nerf my superpowered character?

Yes! If that would be fun for you, your character can lose their powers upon waking up in Neocephalos. They could also find themselves human if they were not originally human, but only if this does not change their physical form to something new (meaning, if they were born as a tiefling, they will stay a tiefling, but if they were once a human made into a vampire, they could revert back to being human).

Are they are any powers that aren't permitted or need to be nerfed?

So glad you asked!

Currently, no powers are outright banned, but mods hold the right to change this policy at any time if apps present new challenges with steep game-breaking implications.

Powers that need nerfing are as follows:

Technomancy or any supernatural ability that can manipulate computer systems and machines. Characters can have this power and put it to good use, but will find that a lot of Neocephalos' deeper infrastructure is a blind spot to them.
City-destroying abilities in that the game is a city, so if your character is a walking WMD, they will find there are caps on this potential.
Invulnerability can work to an extent, but after a certain amount of extreme damage, it will cease to function and the character will become vulnerable. This is mainly to keep the environmental limitations intact as well as maintain balance between characters.

One available nerf method is that your character may find themselves physically overwhelmed when they try to activate certain upper tiers of their abilities, becoming dizzy and losing consciousness before they can manage it. Consider this an in-built circuit breaker that they did not have before.

ACTIVITY & REWARDS

What is the game's pace like?

There will be a monthly plot post that can be used as a catch-all for all log activity (but people are welcome to make their own log posts too), and these plot posts will alternate plot heavy content and more light weight social prompts.

We want to be realistic and forgiving when it comes to balancing life commitments with our writing-intensive hobby. We also want to encourage a game that is lively and reactive. Individual engagement will be up to the player, but the game itself will strive to provide regular engagement opportunities.

What are the activity requirements?

There is a static activity post that players are asked to reply to once every month with a short summary of their characters' activity in the game and a status update as to their current Prestige level. Optionally, players can also tally their activity for Privilege points.

This is a check-in, and no threads are required as activity proof in order for characters to stay in the game.

Because there is no thread count based activity requirement, there is no strike system. Players must check-in or be swept from the game, unless they have notified the mods of a hiatus.

So we can we go on hiatus?

Players can apply for one month of hiatus at any point before midnight of the last day of that month, which exempts them from check-ins and maintains their characters Prestige level. Players cannot request consecutive hiatuses without mod discussion, but we are always happy to figure something out with players who remain communicative.

Is there any incentive for activity?

Yes!

Check out the Prestige & Privilege page for information around how participation is rewarded through in-game privileges and OOC rewards like extra invites or character slots. Conversely, Prestige as an in-game status condition is not activity based, but rewards longevity and setting engagement.

The goal is to give extra bonuses for those that would like them and encourage diverse CR, but not penalise players who have limited time to participate.

ARRIVAL IN GAME

How does my character arrive?

The exact circumstances of arrival, in terms of how and why they are brought to Neocephalos, are opaque to characters. What you as a player need to know is that your character is drawn suddenly from their canon point and immediately wakes up in a new world.

Besides the first event, there aren't regular arrival logs. Players are free to manage their own arrival into the game.

Does my character bring anything with them when they arrive?

Nope.

In the case of aids such as glasses, walking sticks, wheelchairs, and so on, these or equivalents can be obtained in game more or less immediately. If something needs more elaborate translation, like Tony Stark's arc reactor, feel free to assume a substitute has been made for them, or check in with the mods to brainstorm.

Can my character's pet come along?

At this time, the answer is no. But there may be functionality to bring them into the game in the future!

My character is injured or maimed at the time of their canon point. Will they still be when they arrive?

If your character was freshly injured or maimed in such a way that they need immediate medical treatment, your character will wake up fully healed. Old scars and injuries that have already had time to heal will still be present.

Can my character canon update?

Yes. To submit a canon update request, you can use the form found on the Player Requests page, where you can find more information.

CORPORATIONS

How does my character gets chosen for a corporation?

You as the player will decide what corporation claims your character during the app process. The application will ask you to justify this choice by identifying some innate quality or skill your character has that would allow them to excel, if they chose to or trained into it, in their corporation.

In-game, your character will spend a few days at least in a testing simulation in which a corporation lays their claim and makes your character an asset. Your character will be informed of this decision on their way out of the simulation.

Will it be difficult to develop CR with characters in different corps than mine?

Definitely not! Events will often treat assets as a unified group, and play with different divisions such as economic Tier and Prestige as well as corps, and provide opportunities for different intra-corp collaborations.

All assets will also have a shared CORD subnetwork (the standard network DWRP arrangement) to freely speak with one another. Location-wise, characters are not forced to live and work in the same megabuilding either, although it would be convenient to do so.

Are PCs the only assets that corporations have?

Yes and no.

There are native NPCs who might share the same kind of job, such as a pro fighter with Apex Legacies, an actor working with CDM, or popular public speakers or spiritual leaders who use Blindstar services, and assets may rub shoulders or collaborate with these NPCs who may enjoy and endure the same ups and downs of stardom.

However, the term 'asset' is used to describe PCs and set them apart due to the fact that they a.) are from another dimension and b.) experience a level of fascination, objectification, and discrimination than someone who is natively from Neocephalos. While Neocephalos is a hyper corpocratic world in which everyone is a product in one way or another, assets have an added layer of ownership imposed upon them by not being allowed to exist outside of a corporation.

Are there any NPC assets in general, then?

Yes!

Although it might not be immediately obvious, characters will come to learn that they are assets in a current cycle of imported people, and there has been a seven year gap between this cycle and the last.

There aren't many assets of previous cycles left, but they're around. If you try to ask after who they are, you'll find a lot of Neocephalos civilians aren't able to recall. But then again, they couldn't really tell you who was the hottest thing last month either, so that may just be the nature of the beast.

Can my character switch corps?

If you would like your character to switch corps, then this will need some mod discussion. We'll need to know if you want it to be motivated by your character or by external forces, and do some plotting around what the previous corp gets in return for releasing their asset to another. A switch should be considered on the level of a contained player plot, and involve some penalties along the way, but we hope this won't dissuade you so much as reinforce how binding this relationship actually is.

In addition to the above requirement, your character will not be able to switch again for at least twelve months. If at that stage they switch a second time, they will then be permanently assigned to a corp.

MISCELLANEOUS

Can my character get pregnant?

Yes, but only on a technicality.

All characters, PCs and the main population of NPCs, are by default infertile. In order to achieve pregnancy, both people involved need the required specific cybernetics and therapies to undo this block, and these are extremely difficult to acquire. Where childbirth exists in Neocephalos, it belongs to the extremely privileged.

Above table, children are not permitted as PCs or NPCs. While plots to pursue pregnancy are permitted, this will only be allowed on the proviso that the resulting child would be off-screened. By default, the children would be taken by a corporation. If this is circumvented, the guardians of the child would be retired.

For further context regarding the native population, childbirth is basically unheard of in favour of ectogenesis, which is done in controlled arrangements called kinbatches. You can read more about that on the Setting page.

Can characters, PCs and NPCs both, die?

Yes. And they often do.

However, player characters have an option they can pursue in the event of their character's death. If their character dies and the body is recovered and mostly intact, they can be turned over to Neocephalos for a kind of resurrection. This process takes one whole month to achieve, and when the character wakes, they will find anywhere between 50% to 100% of their Neocephalos memories gone, and incur some kind of psychological penalty that player and mods can collaborate on.

However, this is up to the player. If they would like their character to permanently die, no matter the state of their body, this very fragile process can simply fail to work. If a player would like their character to be brought back to life, then they must honour the above penalties that ensure death has a consequence and therefore has meaning.

It is not currently known if this is a service available to NPCs. It certainly is not advertised anywhere, in a world where everything is advertised everywhere.

NEOCEPHALOS is a science fiction erotica game with an equal emphasis on smut-driven events and corpo-thriller plotting. Characters appear in the corpocratic utopian city of Neocephalos, and quickly learn that they are an asset of one of three major entertainment corporations. These corporations, while unique in theme and focus, all have in common the desire to elevate their assets as celebrities and exploit them for public gratification. The city itself is a far-future construction of megabuildings and underground communities designed to guard against a hostile global environment and contain its hedonistic civilisation within. Its governance is monitored by an artificial intelligence and city namesake, Neocephalos.

The game includes plot-driven rewards around prestige and privilege that influence the kind of lifestyles your character enjoys (or doesn't enjoy), intended to incentivise CR and setting-engagement rather than only activity quantity. Characters, whether they choose to rebel or comply, must find a way to live within a system that cares solely for the superficial happiness of its citizens, and will use its brand new assets to achieve it.

Sex is not a requirement for activity, but players should be aware that the setting is culturally hypersexual in order to facilitate smut-focused CR and plot. The companies that own apped characters will relentlessly push them into erotic and exploitative situations. Characters will have to engage with the core premise of the game or face in-game consequences for non-compliance.
